Cape Town - The identity of the man whose body was found on Table Mountain has been confirmed, but it has not yet been released as his next of kin had not been notified, Western Cape police said on Tuesday.

Police said previously that the man's death appeared to be an accident after initial claims that he had been murdered.

A runner came across the corpse on Sunday on the Pipe Track, a popular hiking trail on the Cape Town landmark.

According to a witness, the man's throat appeared to have been slit "from ear to ear".

The man said he was running down Kasteelspoort when he saw "a trail of blood".

Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut told News24 on Monday that the circumstances surrounding the death of the 57-year-old man were being investigated and that an inquest docket had been registered for this purpose.

A post mortem was being conducted to confirm the cause of death.

Local Community Police Forum chairperson Bernard Schafer told News24 that the man was understood to be a Canadian citizen. He said they were waiting for the results of the post mortem to establish whether his death was indeed accidental and whether foul play could be ruled out.
