Johannesburg – The Nelson Mandela Foundation has heaped praise on struggle stalwart, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, after President Jacob Zuma awarded her with a National Order on Thursday.

A National Order is given to citizens and prominent foreign nationals who have had a noteworthy impact on improving the lives of South Africans or have made a significant impact on society.

Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF) spokesperson, Sello Hatang, said Madikizela-Mandela had dedicated her life to the liberation struggle in South Africa and “suffered greatly for it”.

Madikizela-Mandela could not receive the award personally because she was recuperating from back surgery at her home after being discharged from a Johannesburg Hospital on Tuesday. She was represented by her granddaughter, Zoleka.

Hatang extended his congratulations to veteran freedom fighter, Mac Maharaj, who was also honoured among other South African anti-apartheid activists, scientists and artists.

“It is important that we also acknowledge those from other countries who were given National Orders for their anti-apartheid work," said Hatang. "We urge them to continue their assistance as our young country navigates its struggles ahead.”
