Bloemfontein – Mangaung Deputy Executive Mayor Connie Rampai was killed in a car accident in the early hours of Saturday morning, paramedics said.

According to spokesperson for Trauma Response Africa Stanley Schimper, the crash occurred on the N1 between Verkeerdevlei and Winburg.

Her vehicle collided head-on with a heavy goods truck.

The truck driver sustained moderate injuries. He was transported to hospital for further medical attention.

The ANC in the Free State confirmed that Rampai died while driving back from the party's provincial executive committee meeting in Johannesburg.

"Comrade Connie has been a committed member of the ANC whose life was defined by [her] continued activism and [her] work amongst the many communities," said spokesperson Thabo Meeko.

"We have no doubt she has impacted positively on many lives in the Free State province and in Mangaung Metro municipality where his constituency is based. Even in death she will remain the champion of the poor," he said.
