Pietermaritzburg - KwaZulu-Natal had the highest overall voter registration activity, accounting for 28% of voters that visited their voting stations on the weekend.

The Electoral Commission yesterday reported that over three million voters registered for the first time, re-registered or updated their registration details, and 864 295 of those were from KZN. Of these voters, 166 112 were new registrations, 221 815 were re-registrations in different voting districts and 476 368 visited to confirm and update their registration in the same voting district.

Of the new registrations, 139 471 were under 30 years old.

“This means that there has been a significant response by young persons to the call to register,” the commission said.

The Electoral Commission urged all eligible voters who have still not registered to ensure they do not miss the final registration weekend, which will take place on April 9 and 10.
