Durban - Police officers, paramedics and firefighters banded together for the marathon rescue of an injured trail runner who was lost in Kloof gorge on Tuesday night.

The woman, who had been running alone, was understood to have tripped while jumping over a rock in her path and fell, breaking her ankle.

Her frantic call for help to her husband sparked a series of events that would eventually see a crew of rescuers descending on the gorge to search for her.

Police Search and Rescue Unit officers, along with volunteers from Rescuetech, eThekwini Metro firefighters, EMRS and ER24 paramedic began scouring the dense bush for the woman.

She was eventually found 3km from the closest point to where a vehicle could access, and medics set about treating her fractured limb.

This preceded a marathon three hour-long rescue operation where the woman had to be carried along winding paths etched into the thick gorge undergrowth in the choking coastal heat.

The woman’s ordeal came to an end when the group of rescuers emerged from the trail with her on a rescue stretcher and she was transported to a city hospital in a stable condition.
