Durban - A marathon runner had to be resuscitated on Sunday morning after she collapsed during a running event.

"Reports from the scene indicate that a Pretoria lady aged 32 was running along NMR Avenue when she started feeling ill. She sat down on the pavement and collapsed. Fortunately an off duty nursing sister was on the scene and immediately started with CPR," said Netcare Limited's spokesperson Chris Botha.

"The Netcare 911 Advanced life support paramedics and his team as well as another service arrived at the scene. After connecting a heart monitor, they found that the runner's heart had stopped."

He said they continued with advanced life support resuscitation for about 20 minutes.

"After she was defibrillated twice, you could hear the relief of everyone when her heart started to beat and she resumed spontaneous respirations again."

The woman was transported to a nearby hospital.
