Johannesburg - The ANC in Johannesburg on Wednesday accused Mayor Herman Mashaba of having bungled his first 94 days in office.

The outspoken mayor had made sexist comments about female managers in the metro, cancelled the bicycle lanes project, closed food banks, and had done nothing about corruption, Johannesburg ANC leader Geoffrey Makhubo told reporters.

"This is a man who is clueless about local government and housing service delivery issues," he said.

He said when the ANC was in charge of Johannesburg under mayor Parks Tau, it adopted certain "strategic interventions" to combat fraud and corruption.

"This started with the re-establishment and repositioning of forensic audits and investigations."

The City had been working with police and the Hawks on some investigations. As a result, the City had increased capacity for forensic investigations.

During the ANC’s tenure, Makhubo said 207 investigations were concluded, 251 officials were dismissed and 97 criminal cases opened.

"For Mashaba to suggest that the ANC administration swept these under the carpet and never acted on them is malicious."

The ANC in the region would fight to defend the "democratic gains" in council chambers, courts and the streets.
