Johannesburg – A severe storm, accompanied by hail in some parts of Johannesburg, has led to scores of flight delays at OR Tambo International Airport.

CEO of Airborne Law Enforcement Services, Billy Kerker, said most of the delays were due to the extreme weather.

According to OR Tambo’s flight schedules, 18 flights scheduled for departure were delayed, while another 52 flights due to arrive were also delayed.

Some Twitter users tweeted that the airport was closed due to the weather. OR Tambo International, however, responded on their Twitter page, saying the airport had not been closed.

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) could not be reached for comment.
