Cape Town - A 32-year-old man accused of raping a Stellenbosch University student has been released on R500 bail after appearing in the local magistrate's court on Monday.

The suspect was arrested on Saturday after the student was attacked in the parking lot between the Heemstede and Metanoia residences in the early hours of that morning.

The suspect is not a Maties student.

The case was postponed to May 5 for further investigation.

University spokesperson Martin Viljoen said the campus posed unique security challenges.

"Thousands of students and staff work, study and live on this open campus with complete freedom of movement between town and campus," he said.

Various additional safety initiatives had been introduced in recent years.

They include doing away with night exams and tests, a shuttle service on campus and surrounds, a pedestrian escort service after dark, the rolling out of a vast street camera network, and doubling the number of guards patrolling the primary routes on campus.

"In the coming week, the university will again as far as possible engage stakeholders to see how security can be tightened even more. This could include increased patrols, additional security measures... [and] renewed efforts in raising awareness about the safety concerns on campus and in town," Viljoen said.
