Johannesburg – Here are some of the most important figures from the National Senior Certificate results announced in Midrand on Wednesday night:

•    The 2016 matric pass rate increased to 72.5% - 1.8 percentage points more than last year’s rate of 70.7% (including progressed pupils);
•    Without the progressed pupils, the pass rate was 76.2%, up from 74% in 2015;
•    More than 108 000 pupils who who sat for examinations had been progressed;
•    Of the 674 652 pupils who registered, 64 474 did not write the exams;
•    The Free State was the best-performing province with a 93.2% pass rate, excluding progressed learners;
•    The Eastern Cape remained the worst-performing province with a 63.3% pass rate;
•    111 schools obtained a 100% pass rate;
•    18 schools recorded a 0% pass rate;
•    Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal were the leading provinces when it comes to bachelor's passes;
•    The number of distinctions achieved was 158 166 - an increase of more than 65 000 compared to 2015;
•    54% of the country's matrics came from the three worst performing provinces: the Eastern Cape, Limpopo, and KwaZulu-Natal.
