Cape Town – A Grade 12 pupil was stabbed to death in what appeared to be a gang related attack, the Western Cape education department said on Tuesday.

The attack took place at Ihlumelo Secondary School on Monday morning, said Jessica Shelver, spokesperson for Education MEC Debbie Schafer.

The names of five pupils alleged to have been involved in the incident were handed over to the police.

Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut confirmed the 18-year-old's murder, but said no arrests had yet been made.

The pupils would be suspended pending a disciplinary hearing.

A security guard was on the premises at the time of the incident. The school was provided with emergency security, while Safe Schools officials would monitor the situation.

No similar incidents had been reported at the school this year.

Two district psychologists were at the school to provide support and counselling for those who were severely traumatised.

The department would work with other parties to provide counselling for the family as required.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic and senseless loss of such a young life. Our heartfelt condolences go to the learner's family, friends and school community," said Shelver.
