Durban – KwaZulu-Natal Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu on Monday welcomed the arrests of seven suspects in connection with a robbery and murder in New Hanover.

In a statement, Mchunu said police and the Combined Action Team (CAT) arrested the suspects on December 23. A 9mm pistol, believed to have been used in two incidents, was also recovered.

The suspects stand accused of attacking and robbing a 45-year-old woman and murdering Msawenkosi Ndlovu, 41.

Ndlovu, who had been reported missing, was eventually found in a dam on December 21, with his hands and feet bound. He was believed to have last been seen with one of the suspects at New Hanover before he disappeared.

"We are, indeed, disgusted by crime and condemn in the strongest possible terms the murder and robbery of our people. We, however, welcome the partnership of CAT and the police which has led to the swift arrests of the suspects. This serves as a good example of what all communities can do to ensure that their places are free of crime and criminals," Mchunu said.

He added: "This is, indeed, a welcomed move which underlines what could be achieved if all communities join the growing movement against crime and criminality. It is only through partnerships between police and communities that we can defeat criminals. We appeal for the police to be given space to finalise the investigation."
