Johannesburg – Police on Friday confirmed the murder of top media strategist Gordon Patterson during an attack in his garage at his Randburg home.

Patterson had just driven into his garage at about 20:00 on Thursday evening when two suspects snuck in as the doors were closing and held a gun to his head.

Activist Yusuf Abramjee posted a security video to Twitter, apparently of the incident.

Commenting on the video, police spokesperson Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng said: "We are aware that a video is circulating but we cannot confirm it is of this incident at this stage. We need to still verify the video."

The footage shows two men pulling Patterson from the car towards the garage doors. A scuffle then ensues and they run out.

Mofokeng told News24 that police are investigating a case of murder and attempted hijacking.

A colleague and friend of Patterson, Sandra Gordon, spoke fondly of the media guru.

"Gordon was a forthright, kind and selfless person. He mentored and cared about young media people. Encouraging and motivating in a gentle and wise way. He kept his friends close and enjoyed a wide circle of close colleagues. His contribution to the media sector is as profound as his love of deep sea diving and life in general," Gordon told News24.
