PICS: Inside Pistorius, Krejcir prison cells

2015-12-01 11:01

Pretoria - A large media contingent, including international reporters, went on a guided tour of Kgosi Mampuri II Prison on Tuesday, taking a closer look at the cells that housed Oscar Pistorius and Radovan Krejcir, among others.

The Department of Correctional Services told journalists they wanted them to see prison conditions for themselves and not take information from “so-called reliable sources”, eNCA reporter Karyn Maughan tweeted.

The media took photos of Pistorius’s cell in the hospital wing, complete with curtained windows, a small table above his bed and a basin next to his bed.

A small scrap of writing was pasted onto the wall next to the pillows.

Radovan Krejcir’s cell, right next to the culpable homicide-convicted Paralympian’s, had a sheet covering the window, what appeared to be a radio above the bed, and a box of cereal on a small cabinet near the bed.

One photo showed a slightly browned field on which Krejcir and Pistorius were once videotaped playing soccer.

Earlier this month, The Citizen reported that the prison’s officials faced an investigation by Lawyers for Human Rights after allegations that prisoners were being abused. Some inmates had apparently witnessed the murder of another inmate by correctional officials.
