Thohoyandou - A mental patient attacked and killed a nurse at the Hayani Psychiatric Hospital near Thohoyandou, the provincial health department said on Friday.

The patient, who had been admitted to the prisoners’ ward, used a manhole cover to hit the 52-year-old nurse on Thursday, provincial health department spokesperson Derick Kganyago said.

The hospital’s CCTV footage showed the man sneaking up behind her, hitting her with the cover, throwing it down, then strangling her. He was arrested.

Kganyago said the department was sending a team of investigators to look into ways of preventing attacks on nurses at psychiatric hospitals in the province. Talks would be held with correctional services to ensure security was beefed up in facilities where prisoners were being treated.

The attack had left staff at the hospital traumatised. They were getting counselling.

Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba sent condolences to the hospital's staff and the nurse’s family.
