Johannesburg – Six suspects including an Ekurhuleni Metro police officer are due to appear in the Benoni Magistrate Court on Monday after two police officers were shot and wounded, Gauteng Police said on Sunday.

According to Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini the suspects will be facing charges of truck hijacking, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms.

On Friday morning two police officers were shot and wounded by alleged hijackers in Benoni, while pursuing a hijacked truck.

The truck was later found abandoned in Kempton Park. It was apparently hijacked in Secunda, Mpumalanga.

Nothing was taken from the truck which was carrying cell phones, jewellery and firearms, said Dlamini.

Dlamini said the police officers are recovering at the hospital.

"One was shot in the leg and one was shot in the shoulder."

However, after a follow up investigation, a metro police officer and other suspects were arrested.
During their arrest police seized two unlicensed revolvers, said Dlamini.
