Johannesburg – A Johannesburg metro police officer and a 54-year-old woman were shot and killed on Friday night at an informal settlement in Kliptown in Soweto, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

The officer and the women died at the scene and the suspect fled with the officer’s firearm, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said in a statement.

"The officer was shot while on his way to his vehicle... during the shooting incident, a woman was also fatally wounded," said Dlamini.

The motive for the shooting was still being investigated, Dlamini said.

No arrest had yet been made.
