Johannesburg - A head-on collision between one of State Security Minister David Mahlobo's official vehicles and another car along the R33 road in Mpumalanga has left one man dead, the community safety department said on Thursday.

"Two cars were involved in the accident and one of the cars was being driven by a member of Minister Mahlobo's security detail," spokesperson Joseph Mabuza said.

He said the accident took place on Wednesday afternoon around 14:30 along the R33 route to Amsterdam.

One man died at the scene when the vehicles collided. Mahlobo's security guard sustained minor injuries, Mabuza said.

It was previously reported that the man who died was a pedestrian.

Mahlobo's spokesperson Brian Dube could not confirm whether Mahlobo was in any of the motorcade vehicles during the accident.

Dube told News24 the matter was being investigated by the SA Police Service, however Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala could not immediately confirm whether a case had been opened.

Netwerk24 reported that the man who died, Herman van Schalkwyk, was in his 60s and on the way to see his family for Christmas.
