Seshego - A suspected kidnapper is in hospital after a group attacked him after he allegedly tried to kidnap her child at Seshego Zone 1 on Sunday.

It is alleged that a man, believed to be in his 30s, came across a mother carrying her daughter, 5.

He allegedly snatched the child at knife point and ran into nearby bushes.

"The child's mother screamed for help and subsequently the local community responded in a large number and followed the suspect until he put the [child] down and ran into the river," said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe.

Residents pursued the man and are suspected to have assaulted him using various objects.

Police were alerted and rescued the suspect.

He was taken to hospital with serious multiple injuries.

The mother and her child were not injured during the incident.

Ngoepe said police were investigating a kidnapping case.

The suspect is set to appear in the Seshego Magistrate's Court once he is discharged from hospital.
