Cape Town - While Masiphumelele residents’ demands for a satellite police station have not been met yet, deputy police minister Maggie Sotyu is expected to hand over a mobile police station as an interim measure on Friday.

Frustrated locals pleaded for urgent intervention at a policing meeting in September, alleging that the Ocean View police often failed to respond to complaints.

Sotyu’s office said in a statement that the mobile police station was a short-term plan so police could respond quickly to complaints and cases of crime within the community.

"As promised, we are delivering this mobile police station as an urgent intervention to serve the people of Masiphumelele while we are progressing… to find suitable land for a permanent, full-fledged police station for this community," Sotyu said.

A number of mob-justice incidents have rocked the township in recent weeks as residents claimed the police failed to combat crime in the area.

Among the reported incidents are the murder of an alleged rapist and damage to the home of a man accused of being a drug dealer.
