Durban - A KwaZulu-Natal woman appeared at the Ladysmith Magistrate's Court on Tuesday after she left her 6-month-old baby with a friend to go drinking at a tavern and never returned to fetch the child, local police said.

On November 12 the 22-year-old mother, who has been charged with negligence, went to town and promised to fetch the baby after running errands, said police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele.

When the mother did not return the next day the friend reported the incident to the baby's uncle and he went to look for the mother.

He found her at a local tavern drinking alcohol, something she apparently did regularly.

The uncle reported the mother to the Ladysmith police station where a case was opened.

The infant is being cared for at a local hospital.
