Durban - A woman and her daughter are fighting for their lives in a Zululand hospital after a fire gutted their home in the Ngulele area near Mandini on Friday morning.

KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said paramedics and firefighters had responded to a report of the emergency in the early hours of the morning.

“We got the call at around 03:00 and KZN EMS paramedics rushed to the scene. When they arrived they found that a woman in her fifties and a 9-year-old girl had both sustained significant burn wounds,” he said.

The pair were treated at the scene by medics before they were rushed in an ambulance to a hospital in the northern part of KZN for further urgent care.

“What we know is that for now they are both in a critical condition. What is unknown is what caused the fire in the first place and that will have to be investigated,” he said.

Police spokespeople had not responded to queries at the time of publishing.
