Johannesburg -  A man who set himself on fire at Montecasino asked for a lighter from a smoker near one of the entertainment venue’s entrances, an eyewitness said on Monday.

“I just saw him take a lighter from another man who was smoking. The next thing the entrance just went up in flames," the woman told News24. She did not want to be named.

She and several other people ran as the man screamed.

"I couldn't see anything. The area was filled with smoke. All we could hear was someone screaming in pain and people rushing around. It was chaotic."

She heard the man had lost R800 000 gambling.

"They told us he kept losing money. When he lost everything he went to his car and came out and set himself on fire. We suspect he went to the car to douse himself with petrol or paraffin," she said.

On Monday, cleaners were still trying to remove the smoke stains from the walls outside entrance 4.

Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said the man died on the scene.

Police could not be immediately be reached for comment on Monday. The man had not yet been identified.
