Cape Town – In order for the motion to remove President Jacob Zuma to be successful in the National Assembly, at least 267 Members of Parliament have to vote in its favour.

The National Assembly on Tuesday will debate a motion tabled by Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane to have Zuma removed from office.

This follows last week's Constitutional Court ruling that Zuma failed to uphold the Constitution when he did not comply with Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's remedial action regarding the non-security upgrades to his Nkandla homestead.

The motion is calling for the removal of the president in terms of Section 89 of the Constitution.

The motion has to be supported by at least a two-third majority of MPs.

MPs came back from recess to debate the motion on Tuesday, which has been given priority.

The ruling party has 249 MPs in the National Assembly, while opposition parties have 151 seats in the House.

This means that more than 100 members of the ANC would have to vote against the "party line" in order for the motion to pass, were all the opposition to support it unanimously.

According to Parliament, if the president is removed in terms of Section 89, he would then not be entitled to any benefits of the office and could never work for government again.
