SA CRIME STATS: Sexual assault down by 3.2%

2016-09-02 12:30

The South African Police Service has released the annual crime statistics in Parliament.WATCH

Cape Town – Seven of the 10 police stations with the highest reported murders were in the Western Cape, Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko said on Friday.

These were in Nyanga, Gugulethu, Harare, Khayelitsha, Delft, Kraaifontein and Mfuleni.

Two were in Kwazulu-Natal: Inandi and Umlazi.

Entering the list for the first time was the Eastern Cape station of Bethelsdorp.

Speaking during a media briefing on the 2015/16 crime statistics, Nhleko said the areas where these stations were situated shared many common traits.

These were overpopulation, poverty, an over-utilisation of hostels, high unemployment rates, drug dependency and gangsterism.

"The Western Cape recorded the lowest increase in murder, but still ranked the fourth highest contributor to the total number of murder counts," Nkleko said.
