Mbombela – A 42-year-old man turned himself in to police on Monday in connection with the fatal shooting of his wife of 17 years after he allegedly discovered she had left him for another man.

According to Embalenhle police spokesperson Constable Magonseni Nkosi, the wife was shot after she moved in with her boyfriend in Embalenhle at about 20:00 on Saturday.

"According to the information we received, the couple had marital problems and the 32-year-old wife moved out of her husband’s house to stay with her boyfriend. When the suspect discovered that his wife [had] moved in with her boyfriend he went to the house with a gun and shot the woman twice in the chest," said Nkosi.

The couple had been married for 17 years and had two children, aged four and 14.

"It is believed that the woman was alone in the house when her husband killed her. The suspect mentioned that he was angry when he entered the house; he said that his wife saw the gun and rushed to stop it by grabbing the gun. She was certified dead on the scene," added Nkosi.

The suspect faced charges of murder and would make his first appearance in the Evander Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, police said.
