Mpumalanga residents demand no bail for alleged rapist

2015-12-15 16:58

Mbombela - Residents of Matsulu, outside Mbombela, have protested at the Matsulu Magistrate’s Court, demanding that a man accused of drugging and raping a 20-year-old student not be granted bail.

Protest leader Robert Sambo, who chairs the Matsulu Community Policing Forum, said the man did not deserve to be among the community.

"We don’t want him in our community. He doesn’t deserve bail. As the CPF, we will make sure that the community is safe and lives without any fear from these culprits," said Sambo.

The 23-year-old man is accused of drugging and raping a student from Kanyamazane, east of Mbombela in Mpumalanga.

She was found in a bush in Matsulu the next morning, completely naked and in shock.

She had been visiting a friend in Matsulu and was set to return to class that morning when she was attacked.

The accused, who cannot be named until he has pleaded, is charged with rape, assault and attempted murder.

His mother, who attended her son’s court appearance, insisted he was innocent.

"I don’t know why the community hates my son so much. I will support him until the court proves that he is guilty," she said.

The bail application was postponed until Thursday, as his lawyer could not be in court.
