Johannesburg – A senior police detective was shot and wounded, during an investigation into the murder of a shop manager in Braamfischerville in Dobsonville on Wednesday morning, Gauteng police said.

The suspect, 30, who is believed to have shot the officer, then fled and was later found dead. He is believed to have shot himself.

Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the policeman, 48, was allegedly shot by the suspect who was wanted in connection with the murder of a Shoprite manager who was shot dead during a robbery in May this year.

"The suspect was part of a group of about 25 men who shot and killed a branch manager of Shoprite during an armed robbery on May 29. The branch manager died at the scene and another victim was taken to a nearby hospital," Dlamini said.

The gang split up and fled in two minibuses after robbing the shop, employees and customers.

Dlamini said when police arrived at the house where the suspect was hiding on Wednesday, several shots were fired at officers.

"One of them was shot and wounded in the lower body. He was taken to hospital in a stable condition," he said.

The suspect managed to escape, but police then followed leads to track him.

"He was found in an open space where he had allegedly shot himself. Police seized an unlicensed firearm," Dlamini said.

Gauteng police are investigating cases of attempted murder and an inquest.

The search for the other suspects is continuing, Dlamini said.

Police appealed to anyone who may have information about the suspects to come forward.

"Information that may lead to the arrest and conviction of the suspects will be rewarded," added Dlamini.
