Cape Town – A man who was arrested for allegedly setting an occupied car alight in Gardens killed himself in a police cell, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said.

Western Cape police also confirmed that his alleged victim, a 50-year-old German businessman, died due to extensive burn wounds.

Both were admitted to hospital following the incident in Wesley Street in Cape Town a week ago.

It is understood that the car was petrol-bombed following an argument.

The businessman died in hospital on Friday, said Constable Noloyiso Rwexana.

Ipid spokesperson Robbie Raburabu said the 38-year-old suspect was discharged from hospital last week.

He was taken to Cape Town central police station holding cells and took his own life just after midnight on Thursday, said Raburabu.

“He hanged himself in the police cell using the lace on a hoodie top. Ipid is investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.”

The suspect had faced charges of attempted murder and malicious damage to property.

He would have appeared in court following his discharge from hospital.
