Cape Town - FW de Klerk says the Anti-Racism Action Forum (Araf) is welcome to lay charges against him for crimes against black people during apartheid.

"I have no fear whatsoever. My hands are clean," he said.

"This is news to me, and they are welcome to do so," said De Klerk when asked about the development on the sidelines of a conference in Cape Town to mark 26 years since his historic speech which paved the way for the dismantling of apartheid and release of Nelson Mandela.

The Forum said it would lay 22 charges against De Klerk and apartheid-era law and order minister Adriaan Vlok at the Hillbrow police station on Wednesday.

De Klerk said the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) had already tried to put the blame on him for gross violations of human rights.

He had taken the matter to court and won one case, and the second case had stalled with an apology to him.

"He [Vlok] must speak for himself. Let them do so, they are welcome to do so."

ARAF describes itself as a campaign against racism by anti-racist civil society organisations, political parties, revolutionary movements and individuals.

It plans to lay 22 criminal charges against De Klerk and Vlok "for crimes committed against black people for which they didn’t get amnesty at the TRC. Further complaints of racism will be laid against FW De Klerk at the South African Human Rights Commission".
