Johannesburg - With plans for a new trade union federation afoot, Zwelinzima Vavi says he does not see himself leading the new organisation.

"My preference is that I should not be a general secretary of the workers federation again. That's, personally, what I feel," he told reporters in Johannesburg on Thursday.

"My preference is for someone else younger, with no single grey hair, to step forward and to drive this programme."

Vavi, who is the convenor of the workers' summit, which is discussing the establishment of a new union federation, said he hoped his decision would be respected by the unions involved.

He said some had already tried to lobby him to take on the leadership position in the federation.

"But then I'm still a democrat. If they propose something that they think I can do, I will consider it, but my preference is that I shouldn't be in the leadership of the new federation."

The former Cosatu general secretary said it was time for him to do something else now, as he had been involved in the union movement for more than 30 years.

"I want a young fellow to be [leading]."

The steering committee of the new federation has been meeting and discussing a way forward.

Vavi said 53 unions, to date ,had committed to the new federation.
