Xolani Luvuno's turnaround: From addict to amputee runner

2017-05-31 10:06

Just over a year ago Xolani Luvuno was living under a bridge in Sunnyside, Pretoria, addicted to alcohol and Nyaope. Today he has a new ambition - to complete the 2018 Comrades Marathon. WATCH

Pretoria - The City of Tshwane has launched a new drug and substance abuse lifeline, Hopeline.

Tshwane Mayor Solly Msimanga’s spokesperson Samkelo Mgobozi said Hopeline would help those affected through an integrated approach. It would link all stakeholders and assist users with information and support related to services provided in the anti-drug and substance abuse programmes.

“This is with particular respect to the increased use of nyaope and the 'Bluetooth' method that has gripped our youth in the city,” Mgobozi said in a statement.

The Bluetooth method refers to nyaope users sharing a high through blood transfusion after one of the two has used the drug.

Msimanga said 23 NPOs which deal with drugs and substance abuse have received 3.9m of R40m from the city towards the fight against drugs.

The NPOs also signed service level agreements which would ensure that the institutions comply with the requirements as stipulated in the agreements, he said.

“Our preoccupation is to fight the drug problem while creating opportunities for employment and productivity across the city to employ our people so that they may too live a better life and not be condemned to a life of poverty or even condemned to death.”

The contact number for Hopeline is 012 358 5001.
