Newborn baby found dead in Cape Town informal settlement

Cape Town - There is no excuse for dumping and abandoning children, the Western Cape social development department said on Monday, after a newborn baby was found dead in an informal settlement in the Helderberg.

The department would help the police in their investigation of a concealment of birth case following the discovery at Rasta Park in Sir Lowry’s Pass, said Sihle Ngobese, spokesperson for MEC Albert Fritz.

Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said the infant was found on Sunday. Residents made the discovery and informed police.

Ngobese said the department condemned any action which placed the lives of minors at risk.

"Pregnant mothers and prospective parents need not feel trapped and without options. The department, in conjunction with other departments and NGOs, renders a basket of psycho-social and child protection support services to prospective and new parents," he said.

Parents could seek help from social workers at their nearest local or regional social development department office.
