Durban – A National Freedom Party leader has been shot and killed near Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal Community Safety and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu said on Sunday.

Phositshe Mbatha was killed in Basamlilo near Ulundi at the weekend, Mchunu said in a statement.

Mbatha was accosted by unknown gunmen who shot him and injured another person. A third person escaped uninjured.

“Police have been directed to work around the clock to ensure that those responsible for this murder are brought to book immediately," said Mchunu.

He urged community members to work with the police to make sure that those responsible are apprehended soon.

KZN NFP spokesperson Sabelo Sigudu confirmed the incident.
