Port Elizabeth – The hijacking of two students from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University on Saturday ended with the woman being raped and the body of her friend found floating in the sea near Brighton Beach.

The drama started unfolding at around 21:30 when the two students, aged 21 and 28 years respectively, were hijacked in North End. They were sitting in the car when about six men approached them, said police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu in a statement.

The suspects pointed a firearm at them, and forced the couple into the boot of the car before two suspects drove off with their vehicle.

Naidu said the couple were taken to a beach in Port Elizabeth, where the 21-year-old woman was allegedly raped and her male friend shot a few metres away from the car.

The suspects drove off with the woman, dropping her off in central Port Elizabeth. The incident was reported to police during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Task team mobilised

"An investigation task team was immediately mobilised by acting Mount Road Cluster commander Brigadier Ernie Neveling, and a manhunt was conducted for the suspects and the missing man, with the assistance of the PE Flying Squad, SAPS Air Wing, SAPS Search and Rescue divers and NSRI.

"At about 12:30 the body of a male was found floating in the sea near Brighton Beach."

She said the victim’s gold-coloured Polo Vivo, registration number HSC 308EC, had not yet been recovered.

Police have appealed to anyone who can assist in them in tracing the suspects or the hijacked vehicle to contact Detective Captain Klippie Killian of the Mount Road Police on 083 391 2377, or Constable Nande Nkaza 082 442 1384 or 08600 10111.

All information reported to police will be treated as strictly confidential.

Police are investigating charges of rape, hijacking and murder.
