Nine thirsty prisoners escape

East London - A task team has been formed by the Eastern Cape police after nine awaiting trial prisoners escaped from custody on Thursday night, local police said on Friday.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Namhla Mdleleni said the men escaped from Glen Grey police station.  

“According to the information we obtained, the prisoners requested drinking water from the officer on duty and upon arrival with the water the prisoners overpowered the officer, locked him inside the cells and escaped.”

Mdleleni said Jaxa Luphelo, 21, along with Jaxa Bongile, 30, Kuta Leletu, 24, Fisani Vuyolwethu, 24, Fisani Anda, 25, Ncanana Athenkosi, 22, Gwe Nkosekhaya, 28, Kanzi Bongani, 19 and Bhokisi Mpho, 19, were arrested for serious crimes.

Members of the community were warned not to try and apprehend them as they were considered dangerous.

The Glen Grey police are investigating the incident.

Mdleleni said members of the community who know the whereabouth of the suspects, should report it to the nearest police station or call Warrant Officer Zamikhaya Mlahleki on 082 441 8350.
