Durban – Nine people have been rescued off the coast of Margate Beach after the boat they were travelling in capsized.

National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesperson Craig Lambinon said a duty crew provided assistance following eyewitness reports of red distress flares fired from a capsized boat two nautical miles off-shore.

According to Lambinon, a sea rescue crafts, Spirit of Dawn and Caltex Challenger, were launched. On arrival, the charter boat Sosume, was found capsized with nine people in the water.

“All nine men were rescued onto the sea rescue craft and although suffering mild hypothermia only one man, a 31-year-old from Pretoria, had sustained an injury suffering a fish hook embedded in his left ankle area.”

Lambinon said eight of the men were transferred onto a private boat, the Mama Mia and taken ashore where a Hibiscus Medivac ambulance treated them.

The 31 year old was transported to hospital for treatment for the fish hook.

Lambinon added that attempts to right the capsized boat failed at sea. He said the boat was “righted” later on in the surf-line and put on her trailer.

“It is suspected that rough sea conditions may have contributed to the capsizing of the boat,” he said.
