Pretoria - Shop owners in Soshanguve recounted their terror at the hands of armed gangs of looters who marauded through the streets of the township after darkness fell on Tuesday.

Scores of shops were raided, with everything of value stripped off the shelves.

One spaza shop owner, who requested anonymity, said he saw a group of people storming into the shop, before all hell breaking loose.

"I was inside when they broke in. I managed to get out. While fleeing, more people came in. It was a lot of people. They took everything. I ran and they threw me with stones. One caught me and took my phone and everything I had in my pocket," he said.

The man added they even took his driver’s licence.

At another looted shop, a group of young men said the looters appeared to be drunk.

"They were moving from one area to another with bottles of alcohol in hand. They got here and went on the rampage. They took everything that was in the shop," said one of them.

"They also had guns and we could hear shots being fired in different areas. It was seriously bad," he added.

The looters left a chilling message in front of the shop once they were done: "No help, baba."

A relative of the shop owner arrived on Wednesday morning to look for him, but didn't find him. He said he had been calling his cellphone, but it was off.

"Maybe it was stolen during the attack," he said.

This after News24 reported that a local bottle store had been raided by thieves, with damage and lost stock recorded at over R400 000.
