Polokwane – Limpopo matric pupils will not need to rewrite a maths paper after it was leaked, the basic education department said on Monday.

Only a few pupils were involved in the leak, and they had been identified and would face disciplinary proceedings, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga’s spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said.

“It has therefore been determined that a rewrite will not be necessary.”

The leak of the mathematics paper II was uncovered that Giyani High School. At least 100 pupils in 10 Limpopo high schools were found to have accessed the exam before they sat for it.

An investigation would be conducted to determine if the credibility of the examination had been compromised.

“Statistical comparative analysis will be applied to the affected learners and schools to establish if there were any peculiarities that need further investigation.”

An investigation by the Hawks led to the arrest of one Tinyiko Khosa, the owner of the New Era and Mudzahisi private colleges in Malamulele. He allegedly distributed the paper among his pupils at a private lodge.

Mhlanga said the department would conduct a review of the colleges.

Khosa, 52, was denied bail last week and would remain in custody until his next court appearance on December 19.

Hawks provincial spokesperson Matimba Maluleke said they hoped to make further arrests

The last matric exams would be written on Tuesday. Marking of about 11 million scripts would begin at 140 centres around the country on Thursday.
