Swartruggens - The North West health department said it is saddened by the passing of a nurse who died tragically during a taxi hijacking on Women's Day.

North West Health Department spokesperson Tebogo Lekgethwane said the nurse was travelling to the Swartruggens CHC for her night shift when the tragedy occurred at about 18:30 in Swartruggens.

"After hijacking the taxi, the hijacker took off and headed towards Silverkrans," said Lekgethwane.

He said the police were swift in response and got into a protracted chase with the hijacker.

"Unfortunately at around 19:00, while the chase was underway, the hijacker lost control and the taxi overturned, killing a female nurse and another female passenger who is reported to be employed in the Expanded Public Works Programme," he said.

The hijacker later died in hospital.

"He was brought to Moses Kotane Hospital with severe injuries and his condition was critical. He unfortunately also died at around 22:40 while waiting for transfer to Job Shimankane Tabane Hospital," said Lekgethwane.

"The names of all the deceased have not yet been released as the next of kin are still to be informed of their passing."

North West health MEC Dr Magome Masike said he was saddened by the passing of the nurse.

"As the North West Department of Health, we are shocked by this horrendous incident. It is sad that we have to lose much-needed health professionals through crime. I will send a message of condolences to the family. Their loss is our loss," said Masike.
