Pretoria - The North West province MEC who died in a car crash on Thursday has been named as Social Development MEC Kgakgamatso Nkewu.

Nkewu's driver and bodyguard are in a critical condition following the accident that resulted in her death.

"The driver and the bodyguard are hospitalised and are in a critical stage. The details about other arrangements will be made as soon as a government delegation has met with her family," provincial spokesperson Brian Setswambung told News24.

Nkewu was killed on Thursday afternoon when her car caught fire after an accident.

"She was travelling from Mahikeng to Taung. The accident occurred on the N18 road in Vryburg. Her vehicle collided with a cyclist who also passed on. The Vito then rolled a few times and caught fire and ultimately the MEC then died in the vehicle," he said.

A delegation was sent to her family to break the news about her death.

Nkewu is the second MEC to die in a car accident in less than a month. Limpopo Agriculture MEC Joy Matshoge also died in a car accident recently.
