Kimberley – A 26-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for murdering his 24-year-old wife with a broom stick, Northern Cape police said on Friday.

Pieter Mokae, from Platfontein near Kimberley, was sentenced in the town’s Regional Court on Friday, said Lieutenant Sergio Kock.

Kock said the incident happened on March 2, 2014, during an argument between the couple.

"The accused hit the victim with a broomstick which caused her to land up in hospital where she later passed on," said Kock.

The suspect fled the scene and was later arrested by the police.
