Durban – Minister for higher education Blade Nzimande was a no-show at a prayer meeting for the national fees crisis that was attended by protesting students.

Nzimande is believed to have been at the venue at one point but allegedly left due to other commitments.

Earlier, after initially being denied entry, a group of more than 80 EFF students, many of them from the Durban University of Technology (DUT), were allowed to enter the prayer meeting Nzimande was meant to speak at.

The gathering, held at Durban's International Convention Centre (ICC), was hosted by the Alliance of Pentecostal and Charismatic Churches and was advertised as a prayer meeting for the current student crisis.

Organisers initially told students at the door only SRC members would be allowed to enter. But after promising to "not go political" students were let into the sparsely-filled venue.

Police presence was high with metro police and public order policing units in attendance.

Following the prayer meeting student leadership commended the students for not becoming violent.

It was announced that a number of university student leaders in KZN would host a meeting at the Workshop in the Durban CBD on Friday. The purpose of the meeting is to bring all tertiary students together, student leaders said.
