A horror pile-up on the N3 highway in KZN involving numerous trucks and cars has left several people injured and at least on person dead.

Johannesburg - One person was killed and several others injured in a pile-up on the N3 northbound near Heidelberg, Gauteng, on Tuesday, paramedics said.

Four trucks with trailers and 10 cars were involved in the accident between the R550 and the Total Petroport, Emer-G-Med said.

Paramedics arrived on scene just after 13:00 and found the driver of a bakkie and the driver of one of the trucks in a critical condition.

The two were trapped in the crumpled vehicles and required rapid advanced life support. The bakkie driver died while paramedics were treating him.

The truck driver was freed from the wreckage. He had sustained massive abdominal, chest, pelvic and lower limb injuries. He was airlifted to Netcare Union hospital.

Six people sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate and were taken to various local hospitals.
