Johannesburg – The alleged use of a police car in the R24m heist at OR Tambo International Airport could point to the involvement of corrupt cops, DA MP Zakhele Mbhele said on Wednesday.

The party said it plans to write to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to request that it conducts a thorough investigation into whether or not police or its assets were involved in the heist.

Mbhele said the DA will also submit parliamentary questions to find out how many SAPS vehicles and firearms have been found to have been used for criminal activity, as well as how many SAPS members have been found guilty of criminal offences.

Furthermore, the DA will also submit questions to Police Minister Nathi Nhleko and Transport Minister Dipuo Peters to determine the state of security at the country's airports.

High-level investigation

"The use of a police vehicle in this incident is extremely concerning and could point to the involvement of corrupt cops.

"Police should be protecting the lives and property of South Africa's people and we should not be seeing the use of official resources by corrupt cops to enrich themselves," Mbhele said.

A total of R24m was stolen from a plane at the airport, sources told News24.

Suspects in a marked police vehicle intercepted the money after an SAA flight landed, News24 reported on Tuesday evening. A white Mercedes-Benz is believed to have been used in the operation.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said a high-level investigation, involving all law enforcement agencies, was underway. He declined to divulge further information.

Airports Company South Africa spokesperson Trevor Jones said no shots were fired during the incident and no injuries were reported.
