On Wednesday morning Oscar Pistorius was allowed to say farewell to his grandmother, a source close to the family told YOU Magazine.

Joyce Bekker, the mother of Oscar, Carl and Aimee’s mom, Sheila, died as a result of old age-related complications last week Thursday, at the age of 93.

A memorial service was held for her at the Anglican St. Michael’s church in Bryanston, Johannesburg on Wednesday.

“Yes, he was allowed to attend," the trusted source confirmed. "It was a rigorous process for him to be able to be there.”

Oscar is currently serving a six-year prison sentence in the Atteridgeville prison west of Pretoria, for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

“It was a lovely ceremony where the family could celebrate her life. The family got a chance to share their memories and what they cherished most about her,” the insider said of the memorial service for Joyce.

Ouma Joyce was born in England. She met her husband, Leonard Arnoldus Bekker, in Kenya where Oscar's mother Sheila was born. The family then immigrated to South Africa.

Leonard Arnoldus died roughly five years ago at the age of 90. Ouma Joyce has been living in Bryanston, Johannesburg for the past few years.

Their Ouma Joyce was, like their mother and their grandmother Gerti, a rock for Carl, Oscar and Aimee.

“Their mother was a strong woman. She had so much love inside her, so much grace and strength. Their Oumie was exactly the same. Their Ouma Joyce too. Everyone was beautiful, with spirits that could endure anything,” the source said.

“Ouma Joyce was a remarkable woman. She had an incredible sense of humour.”

“The children had formidable women in their lives. Incredibly strong woman. The children are all heartbroken, but grateful that they had the opportunity to have these woman as role models.”

Sheila and their father, Henke Pistorius, were divorced when Oscar was six years old. Nine years late Shiela died when her hepatitis was misdiagnosed.

Then there was their grandmother on their father’s side, Gerti Pistorius, or Oumi as they called her, who died at the end of last year at the age of 92.

Oscar and his siblings' only surviving grandparent is their grandfather Hendrik Pistorius, who will turn 100 at the end of this month.

The department of correctional services (DCS) didn’t respond when we asked for comment.
