Cape Town - Within six months, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has received 2 739 cases reported against police, with most involving assault.

Minister of Police Nathi Nhleko on Sunday said between April 1 and September 30, 1 745 assault complaints were laid.

To curb this, he said IPID would be "more robust in its awareness campaigns".

"Planned strategies include participating in police station lectures wherein the focus would be on creating awareness on the need for the use of a human rights approach to policing," he said at a justice, crime prevention and security cluster briefing on Sunday.

Of the 2 739 cases reported, investigations into about 52% (1 438) of the reported cases have been completed.

Probes into about 37% (1 025) are currently under way, while 10% (276) of the cases have been closed.

"We also referred a total of 635 disciplinary recommendations to SAPS for departmental action," he said.

"Criminal convictions at this stage stand at 20, with three deaths as a result of police action, five for the discharge of firearms, two rapes and eight assaults."

Most of these incidents were reported in the Western Cape, followed by Mpumalanga, Nhleko said.
