Johannesburg - A total of 434 pupils were expelled from Gauteng schools in the last financial year, the provincial education department said on Tuesday.

The majority, 347, were kicked out for selling, possessing, or using drugs, or drinking alcohol.

"We are not proud of the expulsions but there will be no schooling without discipline," Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said.

A further 65 were expelled for either threatening or assaulting a pupil or teacher, stealing, having a weapon, or failing to adhere to their school's code of conduct.

Twenty-two were expelled for racist remarks, damaging school property, sexual assault, public indecency, bunking, or disrupting classes.

Lesufi said this was not something the department was proud of.

Meanwhile, 5248 pupils were pregnant in the last financial year. Lesufi said this was shocking as the department had introduced several measures to educate children about safe sex, including offering them a vaccine to prevent pregnancies.

What contributed to pupils' behaviour was their exposure to such behaviour via the media, he said.

Media coverage between 18:00 and 21:00, when he said pupils were watching television, had to be more educational and socially uplifting, unlike the "kissing, guns and witchcraft" they were currently exposed to.
