Cape Town - Fires that have been raging through the Overberg in the Western Cape have been contained.

Overberg District Municipality fire chief Reinard Geldenhuys said everything was calm on Monday morning.

“And it is continuously raining,” he said.

The vegetation fires destroyed thousands of hectares last week. Additional crews and helicopters were brought in almost daily to fight the blaze.

The affected areas included Simonsberg and Elsenburg.
