Johannesburg – Convicted paedophile Christo Ioannides was on Thursday sentenced to 20 years in jail for raping his young niece.

The Benoni Magistrate’s Court sentenced him to 15 years for rape, and five years each for crimen injuria, assault, and contravention of the Children’s Act, Women and Men Against Child Abuse founder Miranda Friedmann said in a statement.

He would serve in effect 20 years.

On December 8, he was found guilty of raping the girl between 2003 and 2005, when she was around 11 years old.

The girl was from Slovakia and Ioannides threatened to have her and her mother deported back to that country if she said anything.

“Neither the victim nor her mother spoke English, nor did they have their own transport, so they were reliant on the perpetrator.”

It took five years for him to be found guilty after charges were laid in 2011. In 2013, the case was thrown out for lack of evidence. The matter only progressed after the family hired a private investigator in 2011.

“If the extended family had not been able to pay experts to assist them, would we have ever seen a conviction? What happens to victims and families who do not have the resources to obtain these experts?” Friedmann asked.

News24 reported on Monday that the High Court in Johannesburg sentenced Warren Troy Knoop to 32 life sentences and 170 years in prison for 870 charges, including rape, and possession of and creating child pornography.

“I need help. This has been a cry for help and from here on. I can make a difference. It hurts me, but I deserve this. I need help,” Knoop told the court crying ahead of his sentencing.
